JSLH offers a liberal arts programme unlike any other. Collaborative learning is a key concept. This means that the classroom and the community are places where new knowledge is created. Through small classes, close faculty‐student engagement, and a strong interdisciplinary foundation students learn to be independent and creative thinkers. Students learn to be effective communicators and critical thinkers. Engaging in research along with faculty mentors takes students from classroom theory and into the field where ideas are explored and shared with the community outside JGU. The latest innovations in technology including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Programming Languages and Performance Analysis Systems are among the tools tudents learn to use. All courses emphasize the importance of ethical decision-making and the fundamental goal of all students to engage in meaningful careers that give back to the community.
JSLH equips its students with a unique set of attributes that prepares them to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world. Students consciously cultivate Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes that not only provide the necessary capabilities to recognize and take on obstacles, but also create positive solutions. No single discipline can achieve these goals, rather it is the synergy that results when knowledge, skills and attitudes are blended.

Interdisciplinary foundation courses help students engage in a variety of social science and humanities subjects such as Literature, History, Environmental Studies, Political Science, Expressive Arts and Philosophy. As a result, classes often have discussions from multiple perspectives.
Experiential learning places emphasis on discussion, debate and hands‐on activities, along with field work and reflection on the experience.
Students can choose from 13 different majors options꞉ Economics, Sociology and Anthropology Environment & Sustainable Development, Visual Arts, History, International Business, Literary Studies, Creative Writing and Publishing, Philosophy, Political Science and International Relations, Psychology, Digital Humanities Cultural and Creative Economies and Self-Designed Majors.
Option of a self‐designed major, where the students design their major in consultation with two faculty directors of study. Past self‐ designed majors have included Art History and Literature, International Relations & Environmental Psychology, Psychology and Expressive Arts, International Business & Literature, amongst others.
Several constant themes run through the entire Liberal Arts Programme. These are, applying technology as a tool and as a language. Creating gender awareness. Developing strong sense of ethical awareness.
Community engagement is interwoven in classes and in research. Students along with faculty work with communities throughout India to further common goals through reflection, action and implementation of research.
Working closely, even collaborating, with active (researching and practicing) faculty. Small class sizes of not more than 30 students per class fosters deeper individual focus.
Internationalization encourages students to see the world beyond India's borders and see the self as one among many different nations and classes. All students learn a foreign language and study abroad is encouraged and actively facilitated.
Students can choose from 13 different majors options:
